10 Ways to Work with Your Anger, So That it Can Stop Working You


Your rage, your anger, it is sacred

I talk about anger a lot. As someone who has been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, anger is my main symptom so it is something that I am very familiar with.


I feel it creeping through my body when I’m paralyzed and overwhelmed. I feel it when it hits my chest like a bulldozer while I’m busy masking like I’m ok. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I will be going deep into mental health topics because, it would be very irresponsible for me not to do so as a holistic wellness provider and I would lack integrity. I’m going through a extreme transition in my life and I will be sharing a bit of personal reflections of how I’m handling it all.


Anger has been naturally coming up in my conversations and in my body. I am not surprised with all of these planets going into Aries. Aries energy will bring up dormant anger and ways in which enemies (external and internal) have been at play in our lives. It’s important to not suppress these revelations or these feelings. Lean in and “use anger as compost for your garden.” Remember, only you can prevent forest fires and you do that by always tending to your anger and not allowing it to fester unattended.


Protect Your Anger. Anger is not the enemy, but it can and will tire you out, if you aren’t diligent in knowing when it is lingering. Ironically, most people don’t know how they feel when they are angry.


Why? Because it’s pure energy.


You may feel extremely productive and have the habit of constantly running yourself into burn out (I’ve been there).


You may be extremely snappy and defensive and quick to set the record straight or cut someone off (I’ve also been there).


Anger doesn’t stop you in your tracks and make you immobile the way sadness does. Instead, it will send you aimlessly spinning and spiraling through the same lesson cycles until you notice it. Can you never keep a relationship? Do you have issues maintaining a job? In the relationships that you do have, is there always tension?


Some Suggestions

Here are some things you can do to cultivate your anger so that we can get in the habit of addressing it before we feel it in our chest:


  1. When you feel unsettled, annoyed, triggered, etc. pause and observe. Then ask, what are you attempting to reveal


  1. Create sacred space for it and dance. If you want ideas on this, I will be doing a deep dive on demystifying anger shortly, so stay tuned.


  1. Do a brain release of all the thoughts that comes into your mind. Write it on dissolvable paper and release it in the river or in a water vessel.


  1. Reflect on your earliest memory of being angry, did you process it? It’s possible it still lives in your body. Dance. Move. Release it.


  1. Reflect on your latest memory of being angry, what was it? Describe it in detail. Process it fully now.


  1. Journal prompt: What is your relationship with fire?


  1. Journal prompt: How do you react when things in your life begin to move swiftly?

  1. Rigorous exercise, then slow it down. Rigorous exercise gets it out of your mind. Slowing it down, gets it out of your body.


  1. Soak in a bath or a body of water.
